History of the NORMAN Rehabilitation Centre

The history of the NORMAN rehabilitation centre goes back to the student days of its owner, Norman Łoziński, who created the PAJĄK device.

The history of the NORMAN rehabilitation centre goes back to the student days of the centre’s owner, Norman Łoziński, who in his first years of study had no idea that he would soon create something that would transform the rehabilitation process for patients all over the world. But let us begin at the beginning.

Professor Adam Haupt (Rector of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, now the Academy of Fine Arts), during his teaching would remind all his students: “When you design, do not forget about people with disabilities.” Norman Łoziński took this to heart. He carefully studied the barriers faced by people with disabilities and by the physiotherapists working at the time. As a result of this research, a sport-and-rehabilitation device called “PAJĄK” was born. A device that allows patients to feel their body in space, to overcome the barrier of fear, to adopt positions that had previously been impossible for them to achieve, and, at the same time, to work more effectively on specific deficits. A device that is an extra pair of hands for the physiotherapist, making work with the patient more effective and safer. Simple in its construction, yet offering enormous possibilities for patients and physiotherapists alike. A device that came to be hailed as “the missing link in rehabilitation.”

“A month on the PAJĄK gives as much as several years of standard rehabilitation.”

The PAJĄK began drawing patients to Poland from the most distant corners of the world. However, this did not happen overnight. The early days were very difficult because of the limited scope for promoting the device. The lack of the internet and of funding were an effective barrier to spreading any kind of information. The turning point proved to be a scientific symposium organised by Norman Łoziński in Mielno-Unieście. The young designer, at the very start of his professional career, stood before a body of rehabilitation specialists as well as doctors of various specialisations. Invitations also crossed the ocean, and so Poland welcomed leading medical authorities, including figures from the United States. Everyone wanted to hear about the invention created by a designer who had decided to help people who were ill regain their mobility.

News of the PAJĄK spread across the world at the speed of light, and patients from the USA, Japan, India and European countries began travelling to Koszalin. Thus began the most wonderful chapter in the professional career of designer Norman Łoziński. Together with experienced doctors and physiotherapists, he set out on an extraordinary journey that has now lasted more than 30 years.

All of this wealth of experience is at the disposal of our patients, who take part in rehabilitation stays at the NORMAN centre.
